how
to make a 100 in orchestra
JJ Pearce HS, Melissa Livings, Director
|
Just like all your other classes at Pearce, the orchestra gives grades
each six weeks that affect a student’s GPA—hopefully positively. Here’s an
outline of exactly how orchestra students are graded. Please note that RISD has
established district-wide grading guidelines in music that must followed in all
secondary music classrooms. For more specific information please refer to your
orchestra handbook in hardcopy or in electronic form on your Charms account.
25%--Pass-offs (Skills)
- Pass-offs (playing tests) will
be given to assess the student’s ability to comprehend assigned music.
- Pass-offs can include all-region
excerpts, class music, scales, etc.
- All pass-offs will be recorded
on the student’s “Test Card” so that students receive immediate feedback
on their performance.
- Grades are given based on a
point scale using various performance criteria.
- Pass-offs may be retaken at any
time for no penalty if the student is not satisfied with the grade given.
20%--Extra Sectionals/Rehearsals (part of Participation)
- Regularly scheduled sectionals
and/or extra rehearsals outside of the school day may occur throughout the
school year. Students will receive a grade based on their attendance and
promptness.
- Students who cannot attend a
sectional or rehearsal should notify the director in writing at least 24
hours in advance.
5%--Material Checks (Participation)
- All students are required to
have all required materials on a daily basis as listed in the orchestra
handbook.
- Material checks may be scheduled
in advance or on a random basis.
15%--Ensemble Skills (Fundamentals)
- Students are graded on their
ability to adhere to the orchestra code of conduct during orchestra
rehearsals.
- Ensemble skills are observed
throughout the rehearsal on a daily basis and include rules and class
procedures as described in the orchestra handbook.
10%--Posture/Position (Fundamentals)
- Students are observed on a daily
basis during warm-up and rehearsal for observance of correct posture and
position.
25%--Performance
- Students will receive a grade
for each performance during a grading period.
- If no public performance occurs
during the grading period, the grade will be determined on informal
performance during rehearsal.
